I'm using the 2007 excel and in some cells all I'm doing is adding 2 other cells together. This error is in several places.

eg cell nb4 = ed4+ed5

ed4 and ed5 are apparently blank but I get this box with the exclamation point for cell nb4 and the error is "a value used in the formula is of the wrong data type."

wtf is this error and how can I correct this en masse? If I clear the contents of ed4 and ed5, the box disappears but I'm not doing that 400 times.

yeah great way to burn off the turkey I know. :puppy:

Make sure that you don't have a spcae in those boxes. Because otherwise you're trying to add an integer/decimal with a string. You're going to need to clear teh contents of the row/columns that are affected. Use the drag and drop.

Thx EL. Is there a function to clear the cells other than clean()?

My sparse data is from C4:DH1100 so it's a lot of cells - most are blank. I was thinking of simply going to say hh4, doing a

=fixitfunction(c4) and fill right and then fill down, then copying and pasting the values.

Any such function or do I have to try some trick like multiplying by 1 (didn't work)

go to each of the cells where you are getting this error, hit 'F2' to edit, then put an equals sign '=' in front of each formula. this should change it from text to numerical.

You should be able to highlight just one of the affected cells and drag your mouse to highlight many others. Then go up to your toolbar and look for EDIT>FORMAT CELLS>NUMERIC

and just do them all in bulk. (or at least several steps less than doing them one at a time).

thx guys! I eventually just did a =if(iserror(cell),0,cell) and filled right, filled down and then copied and pasted the values.

I will move this post to the Tech forum, so that more people can benefit from the answer in the future and the thread does not get lost in the bowels of the offshore forum.....
